New country and continent, same blog...
Well, it has been over 2 months since I last wrote, so thought it time to stop being so lazy and start writing again!
I finally made the move from Nigeria and not at all too soon. Leaving Nigeria was no easier than getting into the country, but I made it out in one piece.
I am now in India, still working on polio, but in a bit of a different capacity. Here, things are actually somewhat more organized, and much less chaotic than Nigeria. Polio is still a major problem here, but the issue is more about the sheer number of people and not so much on compliance and religious issues (although there are areas where this still exists). A bigger problem here is measles, which is usually part of our immunization campaigns, with over a third of the world's deaths from the diseases happening here in India, due to poor immunization...so new challenges in a new environment. Inever know how long I will be anywhere, so if you ever had ambition to come to India, you are more than welcome to my home in New Delhi...I live in a really love neighbourhood, with no barbed wiring, or security, and while I stil have to lock my doors, security is as much as a problem as it is in Toronto, so no more having security follow me to the supermarket...and best of all, it is so easy to travel around India, and I will take advantage of this, as I have vowed to travel at least once a month, somewhere in India that I have never been...
I will be heading out on the first polio campaign of 2010..heading to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and then once that is over I will head to Varanasi for a 3-day break...this is where the Ganges is, and where you will see people bathing in it, as other gently placed the bodies of the deceased down the river, supposedly really beautiful, although a little hard to imagine!
Anyways, keep coming back to this site, as I will be trying to keep it up to date as much as possible, and vow to get more photos up, especially as I did not post much from Africa ...but I have a new camera now, so must put it to good use!
Namaste,
Andrea
